This technique is sometimes used when you want to apply different processing to different parts of an image. For example, you might want to separate the nucleus of a galaxy or a comet from its fringes to apply different scalings to the two different parts. Used in conjuction with the Bright Area Mask, you can make two images which can then be re-combined.
