Pre-Hispanic Period

==================== Oaxaca has a long, long history of human activity. It is believed that corn (maize) was developed here some 8,000 years ago. Archeological sites are almost everywhere, numbering in the hundreds, if not thousands.

The center-piece are the ruins of Monte Alban, a city on a commanding hill overlooking the central valley that flourished at the time of the Romans.
